Save The Chula Vista Nature Center

Due to the budget crisis within the City of Chula Vista, there is a proposal by the City's administration team to completely close the Chula Vista Nature Center as early as July 1, 2009.

What you can do to help

  • Through tremendous community support, the Nature Center has raised almost $600,000 since December 4th, but the fight is not over!
  • Please attend the City Council meeting to hear the sustainability plan report and staff's plan:
  • Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 at 4:00 PM
  • Contact the City Manager, Director of Recreation and elected officials and let them know how you feel about the Chula Vista Nature Center. The City Council and Mayor have already expressed their support for the Nature Center and now it is time to let the City Manager and Director of Recreation know how you feel.
  • Click here to send an e-mail to Chula Vista City Manager Jim Sandoval and ALL of the elected officials.
  • Make a Donation to the Friends of the Chula Vista Nature Center.

Why the Chula Vista Nature Center should remain open

  • The Chula Vista Nature Center is the only facility of its kind in San Diego County and offers environmental education programs for approximately 65,000 people annually, which includes 15,000 school children.
  • $7 million in new exhibits and renovations have been made in the last 10 years. The annual net cost of the Nature Center is less than one-half of 1% of the City's overall budget.
  • It could cost millions to repay grants and contracts if the nature center closes.
  • The Nature Center is on the verge of being self sufficient, but it cannot happen overnight. If it is closed, it could take years to rebuild the animal collection, repair deteriorating exhibits and to be reaccredited.
  • Refunds would be due to hundreds of members who have valid memberships.
  • The community needs to make headway on climate change mandates through public education of school children.
